The Swedes have lived in what is present day Sweden for nearly
5,000 years, making them one of the most homogeneous countries in
Europe. The Swedes became Christianized in the 11th Century and
a centralized monarch was established. In 1435, a parliament or
the Riksdag was developed. It was the earliest parliament on the
European continent. From 1521 to 1523, Gustavus I led a revolt
that gained independence from Danish Kings. He built up the
government and military while establishing the Lutheran church.
By the 17th Century, Sweden had gained control of most of the
costal areas surrounding the Baltic Sea. The Napoleonic wars
were the last in which Sweden participated. A strong socialist
government has controlled Sweden for much of the past 50 years.
90% of the economy is controlled by private industry and per
capita GNP (Gross National Product) is one of the highest in the
world. On October 27, 1981 a Soviet submarine went aground
inside Swedish territorial waters. Sweden claimed the submarine
was armed with nuclear weapons and that its grounding was a
flagrant violation of Swedish neutrality. On February 28, 1986,
Premier Olof Palme was shot to death on a Stockholm street. The
assassin was never found and a motive has never been determined.
